The short explanation of this alert was:

The National Park Service wants to reduce the elk population in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, where unnaturally high elk numbers are threatening the park's delicate ecosystem. Managers want to allow trained volunteers to cull elk numbers to more sustainable levels before more serious damage is done. The plan would assure that the cull take place under the close supervision of park managers with a goal of improving the overall health of the herd, and in no way will resemble a public hunt. With very limited options in the short term, NPCA supports this plan as a temporary measure to reduce pressure on the park's sensitive plant communities--but more must be done to secure additional habitat outside the park for elk over the long term.

Send your comments below to the Superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and ask for her leadership in developing an elk management plan that has a long-term focus.
