General Assembly: put guidelines around data center development in Virginia

Data center projects threaten national parks and our precious environmental resources all over Virginia.

Data centers are being proposed and approved next to national parks in counties like Prince William, Culpeper, and Orange. These kinds of data center developments now pose the greatest collective threat to our national parks and historic resources that our great state has ever seen.

In the current General Assembly session, our lawmakers will be presented with numerous bills seeking to reform and regulate this impactful industry. These bills will seek to buffer parks and communities from industrial data center development, protect utility ratepayers from exploding energy costs, and fix the state’s tax credits to prioritize environmentally friendly growth.

Urge the General Assembly not to continue to make the same mistakes we’ve seen across Virginia. Unchecked data center growth is the biggest threat to national parks in Virginia.

It is no secret that numerous data center projects threaten national parks and our precious environmental resources all over Virginia. All one has to do is Google search “Virginia data center” to see a slew of negative press surrounding data centers being proposed and approved next to national parks in counties like Prince William, Culpeper, and Orange.

The exploding Virginia data center industry presents one of the biggest threats currently facing our environment and national parks. From massive projects planned at the gates of Manassas National Battlefield, to massive energy needs leading to increased carbon pollution, the negative impacts of data centers are being felt around the state, and around the world. Thankfully, you still have time to act.

This General Assembly session, numerous bills seeking to reform and regulate this impactful industry will be presented and discussed. These bills will work to buffer parks and communities from industrial data center development, protect utility ratepayers from exploding energy costs, provide transparency around energy and water use, provide State Corporation Commission oversight, and fix the state’s tax credits to prioritize environmentally friendly growth. I urge you to support these bills.
