At the heart of Mojave Trails National Monument, between Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve, a groundwater extraction project threatens one of the Mojave Desert’s most precious resources: water. The proposed Cadiz Inc. project would pump billions of gallons of groundwater from the desert aquifer, putting springs, wildlife habitats, public lands, and culturally significant sites at risk.
Stand in solidarity with the Chemehuevi Tribe and help protect the waters, wildlife, and public lands that make the Mojave Desert irreplaceable. Urge California decisionmakers to oppose Cadiz's groundwater extraction proposal and protect these sacred lands.
For over 40 years, the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe have been targeted by Cadiz Inc., a foreign investor backed company. Cadiz wants to extract and sell groundwater from the Mojave Desert. This project, which Cadiz calls the Mojave Groundwater Bank, would dry up desert springs that are sacred to the Tribe.
“The ancient ocean waters that emptied out and formed the land and subterranean waterways are alive, from the Sky, to the Mountains, to the Earth; as above so below. Our Nuwu Deity Ocean Woman lives in all life and is the living Heart of Mojave Desert springs.” - Chairman Daniel Leivas
We have successfully opposed Cadiz’s efforts to date, but they continue to pursue their scheme in the hopes of making a profit for their shareholders. That’s why we are asking our partners and allies to stand with us in this fight. Our truth is simple: this project would cause irreparable harm to our people, our way of life, and our traditions. Any community sold this water would be left with an unreliable, unsustainable supply. Sign the petition to oppose Cadiz's groundwater extraction scheme and stand in solidarity with the Tribe.
