Veterans, members of the military and their families stand together with park advocates across the country, in opposition to the proposed triumphal arch at the gates of Arlington.

Our national parks in Washington, D.C. are some of the most visited and symbolically significant public spaces anywhere in the world. They are places for reflection, commemoration and represent our democratic ideals.

This massive 250-foot triumphal arch would cast a dark shadow over thousands of military men and women laid to rest with their families here. At twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial, it would permanently remake the monumental landscape that generations of Americans have known as the symbolic heart of our democracy. It would destroy the deliberately designed link between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Every modern-day memorial on the National Mall was approved by Congress, passed all required legal and environmental reviews and included robust public participation. This project fails to meet any of these requirements.

We cannot allow the unlawful arch to be built. Not here. Not ever.
