Stop the destructive mining in Mojave National Preserve.

The Trump Administration is allowing industrial mining in Mojave National Preserve, disregarding National Park Service jurisdiction and overriding policies that protect our national parks.

At 1.6 million acres, Mojave National Preserve is the third-largest unit of the National Park System in the contiguous United States.

If left unchecked, this blatant destruction of Mojave National Preserve sets a dangerous precedent that industrial mining can override policies protecting our national parks. With the administration promoting this harmful project, Congress must step in and stop unauthorized mining in national parks.

We cannot allow these iconic places to be carved up for the benefit of foreign interests and big corporations.

I am writing in opposition to the Department of the Interior’s recent announcement promoting Dateline Resources’ speculative mining in Mojave National Preserve at Colosseum Mine. I urge you to reach out to Secretary Burgum and voice your opposition to this effort moving forward.

Mojave National Preserve, managed by the National Park Service, was established by Congress through the California Desert Protection Act in 1994. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has no jurisdiction over these lands and it is unacceptable that an expired 1985 BLM plan of operations is being used to justify new exploration of minerals inside of a national park unit.

This announcement disregards National Park Service jurisdiction, undermines the Mining in the Parks Act, and directly promotes destruction of landscapes protected as a national park. Bulldozers have already torn through sensitive park habitat and restoration areas – destruction that should never occur in a national park.

I urge you to take action and hold the Department of the Interior accountable to follow processes established by law to protect our national parks. This administration must retract their announcement and protect National Park Service lands from unauthorized, speculative mining operations.
