The Trump administration has made it clear they are attempting to dismantle several national monuments, including Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Chuckwalla, Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni and more.

Secretary Burgum has confirmed that the administration is reviewing national monuments and could move to erase or shrink monument boundaries.

If we strip protections from the places we chose to preserve, what legacy do we leave to future generations?

I am asking you to uphold one of America’s greatest legacies – the protection of our national parks and monuments through the Antiquities Act.

I am deeply concerned with the review of national monuments, which could result in illegal rollbacks that threaten the Antiquities Act, one of the very foundations of the National Park System. I urge you to not remove protections from any of our national monuments.

On June 8, 1906, President Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act into law to preserve history and culture alongside the vast, wild lands and waters he knew were core to our identity as a nation. And so did the presidents that came after him. This law was meant to preserve our heritage big and small, from desert plateaus to coastal waters. Our country’s conservation ethic was born from the ideals Roosevelt set into motion.

For more than a century, Republican and Democratic presidents have used the Antiquities Act to protect lands with profound cultural, ecological, and historical significance from Saguaro National Park to the Statue of Liberty. These are the places we hold in trust for future generations.

Any move to shrink or weaken monument protections and undermine the Antiquities Act would risk the clean air and water, wildlife corridors, irreplaceable cultural sites, and unforgettable outdoor experiences these landscapes and seashores are known for, from family camping to fishing trips to experiencing the dark night skies. 
 
In places like Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, stories and traditions are woven into the very landscapes held sacred by Tribal Nations, many of whom led the longstanding efforts to protect, and in some cases co-manage, these ancestral lands.

Hundreds of millions of acres of public land are already available to oil and gas and mining industry for development, with over 12 million acres currently under active oil and gas drilling out of 24 million acres under lease, and over 10 million acres under active mining claims. There is no energy justification for targeting our national monuments when there are existing available lands.

I urge you to lead with a vision rooted in conservation and uphold the bipartisan tradition of protecting our public lands and waters. Do not remove protections from any of our national monuments. The Antiquities Act has preserved America’s most extraordinary places for over a century, and now is the time to uphold it.
