13 Million Acres of Public Lands at Risk

Senate: Vote NO on S.J. RES. 63

The Central Yukon Resource Management Plan covers more than 13 million acres of public lands, including those contiguous to Gates of the Arctic National Park and the central Yukon River watershed. The plan includes guidelines for managing populations of salmon and caribou and improves public access in the region, while conserving what makes these lands unique.

Dismantling the Central Yukon plan through a congressional resolution would throw our entire system of managing public lands into chaos. Urge your senators to vote No on S.J. RES 63. We must protect the Western Arctic caribou, Alaska Native communities, and Alaska’s spectacular parklands.

As a supporter of our national parks, I urge you to oppose S.J. Res. 63, disapproving of the Central Yukon Resource Management Plan (RMP), if it comes up for a vote in the Senate.

The Central Yukon RMP governs 13.3 million acres of public lands in central and northern Alaska, including the Dalton Highway corridor contiguous to Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Repealing this RMP would eliminate critical protection for Alaska’s national park wildlife, ecosystems and subsistence resources and ignore more than a decade of engagement and input from Alaska Native Tribes, local communities and the public.

If this plan is undone, it could expedite new permits and rights-of-way for the 211-mile Ambler industrial mining road, which would cut through Gates of the Arctic National Preserve and pose a grave threat to already suffering caribou populations and fisheries vital to the lives and cultures of over 60 Alaska Native communities.

Please reject S.J. Res. 63 and uphold this collaborative plan for one of Alaska’s national park landscapes.
